Shoulder replacement, also called arthroplasty, is a surgical procedure to resurface a shoulder joint damaged by arthritis or trauma. Metal and plastic parts are used to cap the ends of the bones that form the shoulder joint. This surgery may be considered for someone who has severe arthritis or a severe shoulder fracture. During shoulder replacement surgery,joint surfaces are substituted or replaced by prostheses. The goal of shoulder replacement surgery is to replace the parts of the shoulder joint that have been damaged and to relieve shoulder pain that cannot be controlled by other treatments.
